I keep hearing people talk about the Astra Satellite. What is this satellite and what has it got to do with Sky?

Astra 28.2°E is the name of the satellites that sky use to broadcast their TV programmes from. There are several Astra satellites clustered in space at the same stationary orbital position (within one kilometre of each other around 35,000 km from earth) Each satellite has a number of transmitters or "transponders" which broadcast the Sky TV signals to Earth. These TV signals give slightly different "beams", resulting in different "footprints" on Earth. In England, a strong satellite signal is received from all of these transponders but, outside England, the signal becomes progressively weaker. In Scotland you need a slightly larger Sky dish than you do in southern England. As you get further away from the UK the satellite signal continues to get weaker. In some fringe areas, it's not possible to receive signals from EVERY transponder without using a very much larger dish.

How many TV channels will I receive on Sky Digital TV?
